Plants and insects, June 29th, 2014

Well I've been a bit quiet on the blogging front and very busy with a lot of projects. But I'm most proud of my new quarter acre garden plot which is fully fenced to keep the deer out. Here's a count of the main plants I have planted, not counting row crops like green beans, corn, root vegetables, etc.

I also added about 20 more winter squash after this was done. But I should be showing you! Here are some pictures of the latest developments.

Winter squash, corn, tomatoes in the back.

Another view from the squash patch.

Sunflowers looking over a patch of carrot I just started with vermiculite. I'll report back on how that works.

My pretty tomato plants, and a smaller patch of corn from earlier.

A beautiful brandywine tomato. I am trying you a "florida weave" type of trellis.

The insects are flourishing in the new garden, not to the degree they do in the back yard, but more than before.

A jumping spider on the top of the trailer.

Lady beetle pupa. These guys are all over, so nice to see!

Lady beetle larva. Mighty hunters! I've got a little aphid activity already but I don't think it will get away from me. A lot of cucumber beetles, too. Best I can do is try to kill them as I find them. I could have done some floating row cover but I think it's a bit late for that to be a lot of help.
